About

Kia ora, I’m David.

I’m a photographer based in Ōtautahi Christchurch. I grew up in southern Germany, among forests with the Alps on the horizon, and have called Aotearoa home since 2015.

Photography started with my parents’ cameras and turned into a long love affair with landscapes: tramping, climbing and waiting for the light. In 2010 I got my first own camera and since then I've been exploring different flavours of photography, including people, sports, nature, events, music. In 2019 I was named NZ Wilderness Magazine Photographer of the Year.

I’ve worked behind the scenes at events and festivals in Europe and Aotearoa since 2010, photographing many of them, and I photographed my first wedding in 2013.

I keep direction light. I’d rather catch the real laugh than build a pose, and I step in when a little guidance helps: where to stand, where the light is kind, what little details might distract in a photo.

Outside photography I’m a mycologist and project lead. That side of my work lives at davidhera.com.
